Breaking the Glass Ceiling

Please join our Mission Commission Speaker Event on Sunday, October 9, 2022, immediately following our 10:30 a.m. Sunday Worship Service (around 11:45 a.m.) in the Fellowship Hall. Originally planned in February to celebrate Black History Month, the event was delayed until now due to the pandemic. FPC Matawan welcomes our speaker Middlesex County Sheriff Mildred S. Scott.

On January 1, 2011, Mildred S. Scott was sworn in to become the first female Sheriff for the county of Middlesex and the first African American Sheriff in the state of New Jersey. She will be speaking to us on her experience in “breaking the glass ceiling” during her distinguished career. The presentation will be preceded by a light lunch and followed by a question and answer session. If you are unable to attend in person but would like to watch and listen into her presentation, you can join our Zoom in “webinar mode”. The Zoom link will be sent out via constant contact.

In 1968, she started off her law enforcement career as one of the first females to graduate from the county Police Academy to then be sworn in as Sheriff’s Officer, working her way up through the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant and Chief Warrant Officer until she was made Chief Sheriff Officer in 1991, the first female to serve as the highest law enforcement officer in Middlesex County. During her long career at the Sheriff’s Department she supervised all Sheriff’s Officers, oversaw all courthouse security, instituted fingerprinting programs in schools, established a senior citizen home security program and coordinated prisoner transport services with twenty five municipalities within Middlesex County.

As Sheriff, Mildred Scott has made significant improvements and advancements in many areas. She led the Office to be awarded with NJSCOP Accreditation where only 10 other Sheriff’s Offices in the state have achieved this prestigious status. She made substantial changes to the Sheriff’s Office personnel structure to improve the efficiencies and the operation; implemented major improvements in technology and advances in the security of the courthouses and satellite offices; established the Joint Fugitive Task Force in partnership with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office; and implemented the first ever Sheriff’s Civilian Academy.

We welcome Sheriff Scott, and look forward to her presentation!
